Deciding to surrender a pet is never easy, and many individuals find themselves in this situation more often than we realise. SOS understands these challenges and is here to provide support.​

The majority of the birds in our care are not victims of abuse or deliberate neglect; rather, their previous caregivers made the difficult decision to surrender them for various personal reasons. Many caregivers, upon gaining a deeper understanding of their bird's requirements, come to the realisation that they cannot give the necessary time and effort to ensure the bird's physical and psychological well-being and are ill-equipped to manage behavioural challenges.

 

Common reasons for the surrender of birds include:

• Concern about the bird's loneliness.

• Insufficient time to dedicate to the bird.

• Relocation.

• The onset of family responsibilities or illness.

• An inability to cover veterinary costs.

• Lack of initial understanding regarding how parrots integrate into family life.
